Back home.

9 September 2006

Yet another early morning, the bed wasn’t as good as we thought, but it was time to get up anyway. We had asked for breakfast at 8:30, but when we arrived at 8:00, our table was all set. A delicious breakfast with fresh bread rolls and charcuterie, possible from the owners own butchery. It says on his card he has his own butchery and most likely is this were all the wonderful meat is coming from.

We’re back on the road at 8:30, after paying the bill and thank our host for a welcoming stay. It took a while before we found the right direction due to detours, but eventually we’ve found the motorway heading for Karlsruhe. Before we reach this city we leave the autobahn again, because it is getting busy and we want to see more of the scenery.
At 9:30 we are near the Mummelsee and a beautiful sight over the Schwartzwald unfolds before us, Kodak moment!! We’re heading for France to see a bit of the Alsace and to reach the motorway back in to Germany again, avoiding the big cities. We don’t stay long on the motorway, because we want to drive through the Pfalz, heading for Luxemburg. At 11:00 we made a short stop for some coffee and to check the route we want to take. The stop was at the Katarinen Gasthof near Hinterweidental and it’s a very old building, all crooked and the interior was even more ancient than the place we’ve spent the night.

In order to get some mileage we took to the motorway again, heading for Trier. The car needed fuel, but where in the whole of Germany there are gas stations on the motorways, not here. We left the motorway twice to find a gas station and finally found one in Türkis-mühle (of all places). Here we also tried to get something to eat, but at the fast food store the only thing available were fries and sausages. Needless to say we didn’t bother.

In Trier we wandered through the city, mist a turn and wondered again through the city after which we found the road leading to Luxemburg. The bellies start growling, it’s 1 o’clock already, so we drove via the motorway in to Luxemburg, although I could swear it was Belgium.
The road signs aren’t very clear as to where you need to go and that’s why we drove past the exit to the Movenpick restaurant. Maybe as well, the parking lot was jam packed full, so we took the next exit and followed the river along the border, heading for Echternach.
The next stop we made in order to get some food didn’t prove to being successful, the hotel/restaurant was closed for good so we decided to proceed to Echternach.
It looks like the devil has a say in it, again we end up in a place where time stood still. Restaurant du Pont is the name and it was like stepping 50 years back in time. The place is direct opposite the bridge heading back in to Germany. The lady serving us should have been in a home for the bewildered, she knew what food we ordered because she wrote it down, but for whom is was had left her mind the minute she wrote it down. The laundry stood partly folded on a table and the dishes stood behind the bar, but, the food was delicious.

Of course we bought some stuff to satisfy our addiction, because it’s cheap here, we crossed the bridge, back in to Germany, heading for Bitburg. Here awaits us the motorway to take us home, because it’s getting late already and we still have some kilometres to make.
It’s a fine road, via Prum heading to Malmedy and Verviers, although the Belgium part is in a sorry state. However it is in line with our expectations, because in Belgium they have never been able to build a decent road.

At 16:30 we enter the Netherlands again, even without a sign saying so you would know, the car can smell home again. Maastricht is a bottleneck we have to take and after this, the pedal goes to the metal again. At 17:30 our steed stood panting from the whole ordeal very satisfied in front of our house, even the 170 km/h on the autobahn had been becoming.
Our holiday is over, next thing is cleaning things up, writing this bit and check all the pictures we took. This will take some sorting out and there is still a film that needs to be stitched together, in other words, lots of fun bits to do.
Don't put your mouth into motion, before your brain is in gear.
