Our yodel holiday.

Bericht door Pieter »

3 September 2006

18 degrees, a slight drizzle.

On the way over to Austria it’s getting better and warmer.
Getting an early start to the day, we were on the road at 6:00 after the morning rituals to pick up Marijke, our guest on this holiday, but not after swearing because some youngsters stole the wheel caps off my car. After some serious loading all the luggage found a spot in the back of the car and we were of, heading to Tirol.
There’s a slight drizzle of rain, but the weather forecast shows lots of sunshine for Tirol, so we don’t worry about the drizzle. It still is dark when we leave, but soon it gets lighter as we pass the border with Germany at 6:52, where we take the autobahn going south.
On the first part of the autobahn we’re not allowed to go faster than 110 km/h, but further along the road there is no limit and we hit the 160 km/h, so we are making good time.
Near Koblenz we make our first stop, coffee with a cake and a bun out of the back of the car, the Dutch way. 8:15 stopped, 8:30 back on the road, the first 245 km have passed the wheels.

Just before Karlsruhe we stopped for fuel and snacked out of the back of the car again. The clock shows 10:00, but we have to keep up the good spirit, it still is a long way to go. At 11:30 we decided to stop for an early lunch, mainly because we were up and away early in the morning.
By now we’ve reached Merklingen, some 50 km before Ulm, 560 km from home.
Here it gets a lot busier on the road with loads of old age pensioners that don’t know how to drive a car. Also the roadworks on route didn’t help, therefore we decided to leave the autobahn heading for München at Ulm to take the scenic routes south to reach Austria.
Past Memmingen things get worse, a traffic jam halts us and no-one knows why. There is nothing to see and nothing had happened. Luckily we could make up for lost time, the rest of the journey went without any delays.
A slight change of plan takes us down the picturesque roads near Schongau, where we made a stop to stretch the legs and enjoyed a very good cappuccino in the Schnaidberg Alm. 737 km have passed underneath the numb behinds.

Oberammergau is our next goal and because we’re right on schedule we took the route through the village. Beautiful homes, painted in lovely colors and scenery. We didn’t make a stop but is was very nice to see. We are on holiday, so we stay on the scenic route.
The Mautstrasse just past Wallgau is a scenic route, which also is the shortest route, will take us through the valley of the Iller to the Achensee. It’s a toll road, but it doesn’t cost an arm or a leg. Of course we took pictures here, because it’s very beautiful.

The journey comes to an end, a short stop on the shore of the Achensee for some pictures before we hit the village of Maurach. We quickly found the hotel and checked in. The rooms are clean and well appointed, Marijke’s room is a bit smaller because it’s a single room, but the rooms are next to each other and both have a large balcony.
Next is a cool glass of beer and some rosé outside on the terrace because the weather is very lovely in Tirol.
Dinner is served in the large restaurant, it a buffet and the smell of sauerkraut and speck meets us half way the hall. A large group of grey crows had raided the buffet, but there still was enough left for us. After dinner we went to our rooms, unpacking some stuff and writing this journal.
Naturally I checked if there was a unsecured Wi-Fi connection and yes, there was. This meant we could check our email and filed the theft of the wheel caps with the police. We even wrote this journal digitally whereas the previous ones were hand written.
As you could imagine we hit the sack quite early, it’s been a long day.
Don't put your mouth into motion, before your brain is in gear.
