The way home.

Bericht door Pieter »

8 September 2006

Hazy weather, 17 degrees. Later on the day clearing with a brisk breeze.

We already decided to stay a night somewhere in Luxemburg, but we misinterpreted the time it would take to get there. We aren’t planning on taking the main roads and this will make the trip take a lot longer.
After getting fuel for the car in Maurach we set out at 9:05 to the valley of the Inn. Here we take the motorway that brings us past Innsbruck, were we leave the motorway to go to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This is a steep slope and with the car fully loaded again taking the second gear is the right choice.
At 10:15 we reach Mittenwald, a beautiful village, where we wanted to buy a “gerritje” (youth sentiment). Unfortunately there were none to find, or it would be the inn keeper from the coffee shop/store where we took a short break. Given a pointy hat he could figure in a Walt Disney movie.

Füssen is the next goal with a stop at the Königschlosser, Neuschwanstein and Hohenshwangau. We arrive at 12:30 but the clouds are hanging low and we don’t have much time to hang around the place. Instead we enjoy a delicious lunch and did some shopping in the visitor centre, where we bought some postcards and a music/jewellery box (a late birthday present). After all this we’re off to the Bodensee.
We followed the north shore of the Bodensee, although we saw very little of it. Every now and then we get a glimpse of the lake with on the other side Switzerland. Half way the lake, near the Dornier factories we see a blimp flying over the lake. Not just some advertising blimp, but a really big one.
At a road café near Meersburg we stopped for some coffee, we could almost swim in it, that big, and once past the Bodensee we took the motorway heading north.

In order to avoid the big cities we left the motorway to travel through the “Schwartzwald”, good roads and plenty to see. Because it’s getting late we set out on finding a place to stay the night, but also the feed the hungry and to quench the thirsty. This is all happening near Freudenstadt, in the middle of the Schwartzwald.
In Besenfeld we find a small hotel, named Gasthof Nagoldquelle. No place to stay a whole holiday, but for one night it was an adequate spot. It was more like a pub/restaurant with 2 rooms to let with an interior dating back 35 years ago.
But to be honest, we were very friendly welcomed (by a beautiful and sweet girl) and the food is very good. As it has been a long day, we left 8:30 and stopped here 18:30, we were getting tired. After dinner we brought our stuff for the night to our rooms and took a good look around, indeed, this would have been modern 35 years ago.

To hit the sack right away was a bit too much, so we sat at the pub, enjoyed a couple of drinks and watched the cook/owner playing cards with a few locals. By the noises they made it seemed they had a lot of fun doing so, laughing and grumbling and hitting the table.
At 22:30 the lights went out with us, time to reflect this holiday at the inside of the eyelids.

Tomorrow the last leg awaits after which we’ve spent a whole week doing what we enjoy the most.
Don't put your mouth into motion, before your brain is in gear.
